Strategic Commitment to Environmental Stewardship

Gen operates under the guiding principle of "Powering Digital Freedom", a mission that inherently includes a robust commitment to environmental responsibility. By integrating sustainability into its core business strategy, the company focuses on reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and minimising the ecological footprint of its products. This strategy is overseen at the highest level by the Board of Directors, ensuring that corporate responsibility is embedded within the organisational fabric. Through rigorous data tracking across both owned and leased facilities, the Workplace and Corporate Responsibility teams maintain transparency while driving continuous improvement in energy and waste management.

Sustainable Product Innovation

Despite physical products accounting for only 2% of annual revenue, Gen maintains a rigorous approach to their life cycle and material composition. The company has made record-breaking progress in sustainable sourcing, with approximately 55% of its physical products now utilising Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper or cardboard. To combat plastic pollution, Gen has successfully reduced the plastic content in its physical products to less than 0.5%. Moving into 2026, the Supply Chain team is actively transitioning transport packaging from plastic to paper, including the implementation of paper bands and fillers across the Americas, Asia Pacific, and EMEA regions.

Circular Economy and Waste Reduction

Gen actively promotes a circular economy through various recycling and reuse initiatives. The company participates in several European take-back schemes that fund the recycling of consumer products, ensuring compliance with evolving international regulations on deforestation and packaging. Internally, the employee-focused computer buy-back program—pioneered in the United Kingdom—has proven highly successful, reselling over 400 devices globally in the past year alone. Furthermore, Gen donated more than 300 used devices to schools and non-profit organisations, extending the lifespan of hardware and supporting digital inclusion.

Supply Chain Accountability

Sustainability at Gen extends beyond its immediate operations to encompass its entire global supply chain. The company’s primary suppliers, representing over 98% of physical product spend, maintain ISO 14001-certified environmental management systems. By aligning partners with a strict Global Supplier Code of Conduct, Gen ensures that ethical and environmental standards are upheld by all subcontracted parties. Regular business reviews now include mandatory updates on sustainability progress, fostering a culture of accountability and encouraging suppliers to adopt renewable energy sources and optimised packaging solutions.

Empowering Employees and Communities

The company fosters a culture of "environmental stewardship" by engaging its global workforce through initiatives like the TERRA employee resource group. A standout success is the Sustainable Home Improvement Program (SHIP), which provides grants to employees for green projects such as solar power installation and electric vehicle charging. Beyond the office, Gen’s commitment to the planet is evidenced by its partnership with the Planet Water Foundation, which has provided clean water to over 15,000 people since 2018. This comprehensive approach to sustainability earned Gen recognition from Newsweek as one of the World’s Greenest Companies in 2025.
