What sustainability means to techair

Sustainability is a significant priority at techair. The company has conducted a full carbon footprint baseline measurement covering the period from 1st May 2022 to 30th April 2023, encompassing Scope 1 direct emissions, Scope 2 indirect emissions, and Scope 3 indirect value chain emissions.

That baseline serves as the foundation from which techair plans, adapts and focuses its operations to negate and offset its emissions across every part of the business.

To support these goals, techair has partnered with carbon management consultancy 5D Net Zero to carry out a full operational audit, including social auditing where appropriate.

Scope 1

Direct emissions

Target: zero Scope 1 emissions maintained throughout the journey to Net Zero.

Scope 2

Indirect emissions

Target: zero Scope 2 emissions, with ongoing investment in renewable energy sources.

Scope 3

Value chain emissions

Target: a 30% reduction in indirect value chain emissions by 2030.

Four goals, one direction

techair is working in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aim to secure peace and prosperity for people and the planet while tackling climate change. Mindful of all 17 goals, techair has selected four on which to concentrate its efforts.

4

Quality education

Sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas and driving adoption of sustainable practices across the tech industry.

12

Responsible consumption and production

Ensuring products are sustainably produced and encouraging customers to share techair's sustainability values.

13

Climate action

Taking clear, ongoing and measurable action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and work towards Net Zero.

14

Life below water

Limiting the impact of operations and shipping on oceans and seas, and supporting conservation efforts.

SDG Goal 4

Quality education

techair aims to lead from the front on sustainability, and that includes a commitment to sharing knowledge and promoting education within and beyond the technology sector.

The company supports Action for the River Kennet (ARK), an organisation that works to protect and improve the River Kennet, its tributaries and the River Pang. The majority of ARK donations go towards school projects, which aligns directly with techair's commitment to environmental education.

techair also maintains a long-standing partnership with Barnardo's, donating old stock, end-of-life products and development samples rather than disposing of them. That partnership spans more than 15 years, during which thousands of units, bags, cases and peripherals have been donated to help Barnardo's raise vital funds for the services it provides to children, young people and their families.

By contributing to organisations working to promote sustainability and protect the environment, techair aims to extend its positive impact far beyond its own products and operations.

SDG Goal 12

Responsible production
and consumption

techair has undertaken a thorough review of every aspect of its operation to ensure everything it does contributes to achieving its sustainability targets. This extends from product design and materials through to packaging and procurement.

Products

techair has a dedicated eco range using recycled material. Producing just over 3,000 eco backpacks uses 68,000 recycled bottles, preventing them from going to landfill and delivering a 30 to 50% energy saving compared to conventional production.

Beyond materials, sustainability is embedded into design. techair produces a full range of modular products made to last and adaptable to the customer's needs, maximising usability and minimising waste.

Packaging

techair has switched from silica gel to Micro-Pak Dri Clay, a 100% natural, plastic-free desiccant packaged in biodegradable FSC-certified Kraft paper. This removes synthetic, plastic-containing desiccants from packaging while delivering superior moisture protection that is safe to use with metal components.

Procurement

A sustainability procurement policy has been introduced to reduce unnecessary orders and prioritise sea shipping over air freight. techair is actively building relationships with factories that hold environmental standards as a priority and that have set their own targets for reducing waste and pollutant emissions.

techair has partnered with 5D Net Zero, a specialist carbon management consultancy, to carry out a full operational and social audit aligned with its Net Zero targets.

SDG Goal 13

Climate action

techair's commitment to climate action is concrete and measurable. Central to this is a transition from conventional PET fabric to RPET, a material made from recycled PET waste. The eco range already uses RPET, and the aim is to transition the full product range over time.

What one tonne of RPET delivers

One tonne of RPET yarn is made up of 68,000 recycled bottles, equivalent to 3,091 TAECB001 Eco backpacks.

30–50%

Energy saving vs. conventional production

Across its operations, techair has adopted a reduce, reuse, repair, rehome and recycle approach. A lifetime warranty is offered on bags to encourage longevity rather than replacement. The company has switched to electric vehicles for its fleet and uses public transport for business travel wherever possible.

Flexible working and virtual meetings reduce excess travel. Printed materials in offices have been cut back, and energy consumption across the business is actively managed.

Every business decision at techair takes its commitment to climate action into account, including the production of annualised financial modelling to create a product roadmap to Net Zero.

SDG Goal 14

Life below water

As a company that uses materials with potential impact on the world's oceans and seas, techair has committed to UN SDG Goal 14 and takes active steps to conserve aquatic life across the globe.

Sea freight is prioritised over air freight on environmental grounds, with shipments consolidated wherever possible to minimise use of cargo vessels while maintaining global operations. techair works exclusively with factories that have clear wastewater management practices in place.

techair supports Action for the River Kennet (ARK) through volunteer work. The River Kennet is one of England's most important chalk streams, supporting exceptional wildlife diversity. Its proximity to the techair office gives the cause personal as well as environmental significance.

techair plans to build on its relationship with ARK and extend its contribution to life below water, both locally on the River Kennet and more broadly.
